Inspiration for guitarist Nguyen Le’s new recording, Walking on the Tiger’s Tail, came from the ancient Chinese writings Le has been reading lately. Far Eastern musical elements have a place on the album, as do elements of South Asian music, electronica, prog rock and heavy metal, but Le uses them in small and subtle ways. His brand of world jazz-fashioned from gentle arpeggios, sudden changes in tone and bright melodies-is its own genre

Walking on the Tiger’s Tail: When facing danger, one behaves with wisdom, while understanding the peril without provoking it, and remaining both quiet & determined (1). Most of the titles found on this album were inspired by Taoist stories full of this paradoxical poetry. Butterfly Dream: After dreaming that he was a butterfly, Zhuangzi woke up wondering whether he was still Zhuangzi, or rather a butterfly dreaming that he was Zhuangzi (2). Yielding Water: the irresistible strength of water lies in its yielding quality. The highlighted percussions of Jamey Haddad recall the distant lands where those rhythms find their roots. I would like to deeply thank all those who expressed their friendship when my health was weak, & I dedicate this music to those who are now facing the Tiger. Music has sustained me as a mother sustains her child, & Music reminds us that each second is a miracle !
In 1990, Lê launched his solo career, traveling to the United States to record his debut album Miracles with pianist Art Lande, drummer Peter Erskine, and bassist Marc Johnson. Zanzibar appeared two years later with saxophonist Paul McCandless and drummer Joël Allouche, followed by the 1995 trio effort Million Waves, with bassist Dieter Ilg and drummer Danny Gottlieb. Each album found him expanding upon his diverse aesthetic, weaving jazz, world music, rock, and new age into a vibrantly unified sound. He returned to his work with longtime associates Paul McCandless and Art Lande on 2005's Walking on the Tiger's Tail, and delivered a series of duo performances with Fresu and Dhafer Youssef on 2006's Homescape. That same year, he was awarded the Django d'Or.
