The eight CDs that make up this collection document the second rise of Count Basie's big band. The second band had been created at the urging of Billy Eckstine, who convinced Basie that even though the era of the large jazz-swing orchestra - an era he was an architect of - was by all appearances over, he could make a real go of it with his brand of blues and swing.
A lot of the Franklin Mint big-band albums paired jazz and non-jazz "sweet" bands, and though the jazz generally holds up better it's nice to hear some of the softer sounds of the era as well. Inside are photos, bios and data on each track that includes singers and soloists. The discs are what makes these collections so exceptional. The same has been done with "Chattanooga Choo Choo.
