His album This Is James Last remained a UK best-seller for 48 weeks, and his song "Games That Lovers Play" has been covered over a hundred times. Last undertook his final tour months before his death at age 86, upon discovering in September 2014 that an illness (the exact illness was never disclosed) had worsened. While on tour with the Bar-Kays in August 1967, Redding wrote the first verse of the song, under the abbreviated title "Dock of the Bay," on a houseboat at Waldo Point in Sausalito, California. He had completed his famed performance at the Monterey Pop Festival just months earlier, in June 1967. While touring in support of the albums King & Queen (a collaboration with female vocalist Carla Thomas) and Live in Europe, he continued to scribble lines of the song on napkins and hotel paper.
Dock Of The Bay wins two Grammy Awards in 1969 including Best R&B Song and Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male, and are accepted by Redding’s widow Zelma. Revered as one of the greatest R&B singles of all time, (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay is inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame in 1998. As well as being pressed on colored vinyl, the single also features replicas of the original red and black Volt Records labels, and the correct period Atlantic company sleeve. (Sittin’ On) The Dock Of The Bay is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.
