Micachu and the Shapes have announced a new album. 11, the British band will release Good Sad Happy Bad, their follow-up to 2012′s Never, via Rough Trade. That’s the album’s artwork above. For me it’s the most free we have been, says singer and bandleader Mica Levi in a press release, which also states that much of the songs on the new album started out as fragments, and took shape after improvisation in the studio.
The album's roots lie in a jam session that drummer Marc Pell recorded without telling Levi or keyboardist Raisa Khan, and the finished product keeps that spontaneity. More than ever, Micachu & the Shapes are unconcerned with embellishments that could get in the way of capturing the moment; Levi's gritty, nasal voice is as piercing and artless as a gull's caw on "Sea Ai. At times, this immediacy sounds unfinished or vague, leaving the songs in a limbo that's neither catchy enough to be pop nor loose enough to be truly experimental.

Unfortunately, 'Good Sad Happy Bad' is just such an album. I have loved some of Micachu & The Shapes' previous songs so know that there is brilliance to be had. If nothing else, you have to be inspired by the avant garde approach, some of the production, techniques, instrumentation, arrangements and overall freshness of their unique music. At times, though, there are so many ideas, so much to transfer and translate into a track that some of that will undoubtedly work better than others. Good Sad Happy Bad' sounds at times as though it was recorded in a wardrobe. The youthful zest has gone and the claustrophobic atmosphere that pervades the album suffocates it. Some of the songs sound like early Cure demos, whilst others barely take shape because they don't seem fully formed or properly finished. Mica says, "For me, it's the most free we have been.
Despite this, much in the same way that Micachu & The Shapes' sonic ancestors Royal Trux's more free-form efforts invariably entailed, Good Sad Happy Bad only truly rewards the fully conscious and repeated listen. Lapse in attention for more than a couple of tracks here and there's the latent risk of your subconscious folding and dismissing the whole endeavour as a bunch of unexceptional jams that go nowhere. Especially with the more conventionally assembled Never in mind, rather than offering up an album brimming with standalone, mind-expanding tracks that leap out, recognisable from the off, Micachu & The Shapes have actually gone one better in yielding to their collective gut instinct and opting to release what is essentially a studio jam that produced the goods.
Micachu and her Shapes are back with more leftfield weirdo pop on their third studio album, Good Sad Happy Bad, the follow-up to 2012’s Never. Since then, group mastermind and vocalist Mica Levi has been keeping busy, recording and releasing the angular, eerie score to Jonathan Glazer’s 2014 film Under the Skin, starring Scarlett Johansson, and producing (and guesting on) the two EP releases from school friend and vocalist Tirzah. As with everything Levi touches, you can expect low-fi genius from this new release – check out the taster tracks on Youtube to whet your appetite.
Good Sad Happy Bad is more an interesting record than a piece of music you’ll return to for enjoyment. It’s a fun place to visit, but you might not want to live there.
Micachu and The Shapes have unveiled their new single 'Sad' from forthcoming album Good Sad Happy Ba. The third album from Micachu & The Shapes is one of the releases we’re most excited about in the second half of 2015, with Mica Levi returning to her DIY pop outfit after a bunch of triumphant solo ventures, including her BAFTA-nominated score for Under The Skin.
