This compilation of recordings by pianist Jef Gilson are most notable for showcasing some of the earliest work by violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, who also plays clarinet in the ensembles on a few tracks. All the songs were written by Gilson, with the waltzing opener "Java for Raspal," the Monkish "Fable for Gutenberg," and the tongue-in-cheek "Windy Blues" standing out from the pack. Gilson, for the most part, avoids the solo spotlight, instead featuring Ponty, tenor saxophonist Jean-Louis Chautemps, soprano saxophonist Francois Jeanneau,.

Jazz, Jazz, Soiritual Jazz, Folk Jazz, Piano. Jef Gilson is a French jazz pianist whose career started in the sixties and was one of the first bandleaders to utilized the talents of a very young violinist named Jean Luc Ponty. This enchanting compilation comes from four sessions in 1969 and 1973. The first two datesfrom 1969 take place and employ jazz musicians from Madagascar, perhaps a first for acollaboration with musicians from the exotic island of Madagascar, some 20 years beforeHenry Kaiser & David Lindley made their way there. I liked the album at Newport-Paris, 1973 more.
