Rudolf Serkin (28 March 1903 – 8 May 1991) was a Bohemian-born pianist. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest Beethoven interpreters of the 20th century. Serkin was born in Eger, Bohemia, Austro-Hungarian Empire (now Cheb, Czech Republic), to a Russian Jewish family. His father, Mordko Serkin, "had been a Russian basso, and taught him to read music before he could read words.
