Mr. G. Jacobs – Chopin's Nocturne. Label: E. Berliner's Gramophone – . Format: Shellac, 10", 78 RPM, Single Sided. Country: UK. Released: 1901.
Chopin composed his popular Nocturne in E-flat major, Op. 9, No. 2 when he was about twenty. This popular nocturne is in rounded binary form (A, A, B, A, B, A) with coda, C. The A and B sections become increasingly ornamented with each recurrence. The penultimate bar utilizes considerable rhythmic freedom, indicated by the instruction, senza tempo (without tempo). Nocturne in E-flat major opens with a legato melody, mostly played piano, containing graceful upward leaps which becomes increasingly wide as the line unfolds. This melody is heard again three times during the piece.
The Chopin nocturnes consist of 21 pieces for solo piano written by Frédéric Chopin between 1827 and 1846. They are generally considered among the finest short solo works for the instrument and hold an important place in contemporary concert repertoire. Although Chopin did not invent the nocturne, he popularized and expanded on it, building on the form developed by Irish composer John Field.

Chopin wrote Nocturne Number 2 (Opus 9, Number 2, in Eb Major) when he was about twenty years old, and like much of Chopin's music, it is tinged with melancholy. Nocturne Number 4 (Opus 15, Number 1, in F major) is the first of Chopin's three Opus-15 Nocturnes. It was composed in 1832, and has a simple ternary form (A-B-A). Chopin originally entitled this nocturne At the Cemetery, but later he erased the title, saying: "Let them work it out for themselves. Nocturne Number 7 (Opus 27, Number 1, in C Minor ) is the first of Chopin's two Opus-27 Nocturnes, which were both composed in 1835, and are often regarded as two of his the best pieces. Nocturne Number 8 (Opus 27, Number 2, in Db major) was composed in 1835 and consists of variations on a single mood.
