In Carnegie Hall in February 1941, Arturo Toscanini conducted the NBC Symphony Orchestra and soloists Helen Traubel and Lauritz Melchior in excerpts from the operas of Richard Wagner. Toscanini also made it clear that he considered Wagner a master composer and he definitely brought the best from the innovative opera scores. Wagner, along with Franz Lizst and Hector Berlioz, were the promoters of the "New Music," a more advanced, more adventurous, and more mature brand of Romanticism.
The Siegfried Idyll, WWV 103, by Richard Wagner is a symphonic poem for chamber orchestra. Wagner composed the Siegfried Idyll as a birthday present to his second wife, Cosima, after the birth of their son Siegfried in 1869. It was first performed on Christmas morning, 25 December 1870, by a small ensemble of the Tonhalle Orchester Zürich on the stairs of their villa at Tribschen (today part of Lucerne), Switzerland. Cosima awoke to its opening melody.

By Richard Wagner - Helen Traubel, Lauritz Melchior, Arturo Toscanini & NBC Symphony Orchestra. Die Walküre, Act I Scene 3: Ein Minnetraum. Götterdämmerung: Brünhilde's Immolation. For the 1942 - 1943 season, there were advances in her ease on stage as well as splendid singing as Isolde and the Siegfried Brünnhilde (both, however, shorn of the top Cs). With Melchior and the younger Set Svanholm, Traubel held high the German standards at the Metropolitan during the wars years and beyond. When Flagstad finally returned after her long absence, she insisted on sharing her repertory with Traubel, an artist she greatly admired.
