Zanstones - Fundamental Frequency: Volume & Variety FLAC album

Toots Thielemans - Fundamental Frequency.

FF; Volume and Variety" is unquestionably my most celebrated release. For many years it was my most distributed tape. It captures my techniques and compositional verve at a real high. This tape uses sounds and voices by E. Oliva, Robert Ommundsen, Robert I Gillham, Barry Edgar Pilcher, Fendrums, Het Zweet, and Dog as Master. I wish I could objectively describe this tape, but I've heard it so much it's impossible.

In 2001 I was staying in DC with Jeff Surak and my recordings of the time were influenced by his perverse rigor toward the sound arts.

The fundamental frequency, often referred to simply as the fundamental, is defined as the lowest frequency of a periodic waveform. In music, the fundamental is the musical pitch of a note that is perceived as the lowest partial present. In terms of a superposition of sinusoids, the fundamental frequency is the lowest frequency sinusoidal in the sum. In some contexts, the fundamental is usually abbreviated as f0 (or FF), indicating the lowest frequency counting from zero.

The fundamental frequency is also called the first harmonic of the instrument. The diagram at the right shows the first harmonic of a guitar string. If you analyze the wave pattern in the guitar string for this harmonic, you will notice that there is not quite one complete wave within the pattern. Consider an 80-cm long guitar string that has a fundamental frequency (1st harmonic) of 400 Hz. For the first harmonic, the wavelength of the wave pattern would be two times the length of the string (see table above); thus, the wavelength is 160 cm or . 0 m. The speed of the standing wave can now be determined from the wavelength and the frequency. On the other hand, if there are a variety of frequencies sounding out in the mixture, then the timbre of the sound is rather rich in quality. In Lesson 5, these same principles of resonance and standing waves will be applied to other types of instruments besides guitar strings.

The 'second harmonic' (twice the fundamental frequency) is the first overtone. Persons who count differently are wrong. In counting − harmonics are not overtones. Overtones" Harmonics minus 1, or "Harmonics" Overtones + 1. There are integer multiples of a certain frequency (fundamental), that are called harmonics, partial tones (partials) or overtones. It is important to note that the term 'overtones' does not include the fundamental frequency. The first overtone is therefore already the second harmonic or the second partial.

The fundamental frequency provides the sound with its strongest audible pitch reference - it is the predominant frequency in any complex waveform. The fundamental frequency is the frequency we actually hear the sound at. A sine wave is the simplest of all waveforms and contains only a single fundamental frequency and no harmonics or partials - see figure 1. Virtually all musical sounds have waves that are infinitely more complex than a simple sine wave. The higher frequency harmonics that sound above the fundamental make up the harmonic spectrum of the sound. Harmonics can be difficult to perceive distinctly as single components, nevertheless they are there. Harmonics have a lower amplitude (volume) than the fundamental. Harmonics are positive integer multiples of the fundamental.
