Bridge Over Troubled Water was one of the biggest-selling albums of its decade, and it hasn't fallen too far down on the list in years since. Apart from the gospel-flavored title track, which took some evolution to get to what it finally became, however, much of Bridge Over Troubled Water also constitutes a stepping back from the music that Simon & Garfunkel had made on Bookends - this was mostly because the creative partnership that had formed the body and the motivation for the duo's four prior. albums literally consumed itself in the making of Bridge Over Troubled Water.

Simon & Garfunkel released 'Bridge Over Troubled Water,' their final album together, on Jan. 26, 1970. For those who knew Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, the notion of a split probably wouldn't have been difficult to fathom, even at the peak of their success; during their long personal and artistic association, they'd broken up more than once before. But commercially speaking, they were all but infallible when they entered the studio to record Bridge - and in musical terms, they seemed to be just getting started

Bridge over Troubled Water is the fifth and final studio album by American folk rock duo Simon & Garfunkel, released in January 1970 on Columbia Records. Following the duo's soundtrack for The Graduate, Art Garfunkel took an acting role in the film Catch-22, while Paul Simon worked on the songs, writing all tracks except Felice and Boudleaux Bryant's "Bye Bye Love" (previously a hit for the Everly Brothers)

The debut performance of Simon & Garfunkel’s new track, Bridge Over Troubled Water, on their November 1969 TV special confronted these feelings directly. A clear message of peace, of calm, exuded. If ever such a message needed the most sizable platform it was now, and the duo delivered with the album, also named Bridge Over Troubled Water, in the first month of the new decade. Everly Brothers cover Bye Bye Love and the surf-pop influenced Baby Driver get the adrenaline flowing again, but it’s the slower songs which once again capture the album’s true genius. Song For The Asking lasts less than two minutes and closes the album, and most closely resembles the duo’s earlier days. It could be a cut from Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme, and thus is a fitting farewell(though nobody knew it at the time) for one of the giants of pop music.
