Swans Way appeared in an alleged new wave of jazz artists spear-headed by Sade and lesser successfully by the wonderful Carmel and Blue Rondo. Trying to fit them into the jazz category was always wrong, they had many influences but they sounded like, well, Swans Way. The follow-up to their debut single, Theme From The Balcony (represented in its 12 version on this album), came in the shape of Soul Train which has always been one of my favourite all time tracks. Its a masterpiece in songwriting, slow, quick, slow, angst, passion and relief it sounds as fresh as it did in 1984, and,.

The group recorded an album, The Fugitive Kind, which made number 88 on the UK Album Chart in November 1984. The album was - unusually for the early 1980s - issued on the then-new CD format, but only about 100 copies were actually pressed, making it a very rare item today. The band split up in 1985 due to musical differences. De Monde is now one half of the recording duo Maggie & Martin, whilst Shaw.

They recorded an album entitled The Fugitive Kind (released 03/11/1984, UK Album Chart No. 88) and released further singles - The Anchor (released March 1984), Illuminations (released 26/05/1984, UK Singles Chart No. 57), and When the Wild Calls (released 15/09/1984, UK chart No. 80). The album was (unusually for the early 80s) released on the CD format, but only about 100 copies were actually produced, making it a very rare item

Timeless Classic Keeps Getting Stronger!Swans Way burned very brightly for a short time from 1982-84. They produced some fabulous tunes over one album and a clutch of singles. They are one of the few groups that still sound timeless to me and I keep revisiting this album more often than many bigger names. If you like soul, jazz and blues mixed with a dash of pop then you will like Swans Way.This is an essential purchase which also sounds great with credit (hidden away) to 360 Mastering. It also has good sleeve notes - including recent write up by Maggie and a Melody Maker article from 1984 - however there is no mention of the reason that they split up after one album. Listening to Scarlet Fantastic (next band for two of Swans Way) demonstrates 'musical differences'.If like me you have the 1997 `Best of Swans Way' then this is still well worth your investment. Factors to consider for this version include:* Sympathetic remastering that brings out the bottom-end - particularly the double bass. File sizes are 10-15% larger which backs up the verdict from my ears.* Added the extended versions of `The Hangover' `Illuminations' and `The Anchor'.* Added their first single `Theme From the Balcony'* Good sleeve notes - including credits for the support musicians who included Annie Whitehead and Larry Stabbins.* Lost`The Hangover' (edited version) and `Fires Were Started'.* Running time of 77 minutes - 17 minutes more than previously.* CD label is embossed with the cover of `When the Wild Calls' - a nice touch.Credit to Cherry Red Pop for a great reissue.P.S. In case you're wondering the following are missing from CD:Keeping It Strong (Extended Version)Vibration Hoist B-side of `Theme From the Balcony'Summertime (Live) B-side from `Soul Train'Gloomy Sunday (Live) B-side from `Soul Train'Illuminations (Instrumental)It would be good to see a full reissue including the live tracks. I had the privilege of seeing them live and they were absolutely brilliant!

Found another eBay advert from the period that makes no mention of a CD version being sold.

Was this released on CD in 1984? Adverts on eBay currently say it was, but it's not listed here, and CDs were fairly new back then.
