The Carnival in Rio de Janeiro (Portuguese: Carnaval do Rio de Janeiro) is a festival held every year before Lent and considered the biggest carnival in the world with two million people per day on the streets. The first Carnival festival in Rio occurred in 1723. The typical Rio carnival parade is filled with revelers, floats and adornments from numerous samba schools which are located in Rio (more than 200 approximately, divided into five leagues/divisions)

The main carnival parade is made up of several samba schools competing for the title of the best samba school of the year. Each school centers their performance around a chosen theme that is acted out through a team of musicians, samba dancers and elaborately decorated floats after months of preparation. The most important dancer of each school is the Queen of the Drummers, who leads the musicians setting the tone and pace of the school with the beats of their huge steel drums.

The Carnival Parades in Rio de Janeiro have been developed and become something special: a competition between the Samba Schools. The main parades were initially held Downtown. Until the mid-1980s, as spectators bleachers and simply assembled and dismantled every year on the President Vargas avenue, one of the main arteries of Rio de Janeiro. Then, the main parades have been transferred to the Sambódromo, built especially for this event. The preparation for the Samba Parades starts with an anticipation of months. Every school is integrated of thousand of paraders, specially from the community.
