The joy in this album comes as much from the emotional peaks as from the concept-a deftly told story of new love and missing money. The joy in this album comes as much from the emotional peaks as from the concept-a deftly told story of new love and missing money.
15 years on, A Grand Don't Come For Free is still one of a kind. The album was nominated for the Mercury, went platinum in the UK and boasted four back-to-back top 40 singles – something an English rapper hadn't achieved at that level up to that point in time. One can look at this as a major turning point in the history of Britain's relationship with hip-hop – which, up to that point, had mostly produced hits in the genre that were mocking of it (see Morris Minor & The Majors' regrettable Stutter Rap). On May 17, 2004, Mike Skinner released A Grand Don't Come for Free. While Original Pirate Material took in generalities of the everyday – or, as Skinner put it, a day in the life of a geezer – Grand was a record that was defined by conceptuality and storytelling.

Redirected from A Grand Don't Come For Free). A Grand Don't Come for Free is the second studio album from British garage and hip hop act The Streets. It was released on 17 May 2004 and is listed in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. It is a rap opera which follows the story of its protagonist's relationship with a girl named Simone, alongside the mysterious loss of £1,000 from his home (the eponymous "grand")
It’s a not-so-difficult second album. A Grand Don’t Come For Free’ isn’t a rap odyssey fusing Prokofiev with free jazz, dancing bears and the works of Proust on ice. It’s ‘Original Pirate Material’ part two. But better. A sorry, but occasionally celebratory, life-in-an-album tale of a stoned loser called Mike, his broken TV, and the mystery of a missing £1,000. But this is a story, not some attempt for Skinner to portray himself as an intellectual giant to his cowering, mortal fans. Nothing else is as immediate as ‘Don’t Mug Yourself’ or ‘Weak Become Heroes’ from his debut. A great first single, it takes a guitar chug and a boozy rant and combines them to joyous effect. Close your eyes, put four moptops in suits in the picture, and you could easily imagine it as an early Beatles song.

I bet you didn't expect to find this on THIS IS INDIE. The first time that I ever listened to THE STREETS was far from home on BFBS radio station. I had a meeting every wednesday at 1 . and I always listened to a program called The Mystery Year which was about guessing a certain year by just some headlines and some music from that very year.
