Living With Abbreviation by Peg provides four songs that showcase the range of songwriting and musicianship of Sheridan Riley and her steady collaborator Dylan Wood, which has been previously described here. There is a lot of lyrical, personal, and musical data packed into these four songs, as well as some excellent guitar work. The Small Shifts side of this EP might at first seem somewhat daunting- it consists of one 6-minute long song and one 9-minutes long. You might think a major commitment is required to appreciate Hand Habits, but you will be surprised. Duffy’s reverb-drenched voice, acoustic guitar, and electric noise hanging out in the shadows, are a transportive device. You can sit and listen hard for the subtle electronics and try to untangle the lyrics, or you can put it on and drift through the day, just like Duffy’s wandering voice.
The debut album by Hand Habits-aka Albany . stalwart Meg Duffy-is a joyous, open-ended study in vulnerability. Hand Habits’ debut LP, Wildly Idle (Humble Before the Void), evokes a striking image, that of submitting oneself to an expansive unknown with arms outstretched. It’s a feeling Meg Duffy, the singer-songwriter behind this project, knows well; the upstate New York native once packed up everything and moved to Los Angeles to become the guitarist for Kevin Morby. Before that, she’d experimented as Hand Habits around the Albany . scene and, in 2014, released Small Shifts, a 10-inch split with Avi Buffalo’s Sheridan Riley. Like her main influences, Grouper and Phil Elverum, Duffy understands that songs are evolving, living things, as the latter musician once said. One gets the sense that Duffy’s songs are so thoroughly composed that they could fly off on their own.

Following Small Shifts, Duffy placed Hand Habits on hold to pursue opportunities playing guitar with Mega Bog and Kevin Morby. Amongst a full band, Duffy stands tethered to her instrument by a desire to understand it from every angle. It's a marked contrast to Hand Habits, through which Duffy carves out space for more personal expression, both instrumentally and lyrically. But that space is also familiar, with her reflections on company and isolation as equally suffocating entities giving the impression that we've laid our heads here before
