Kaustinen Folk Music Festival (Finnish: Kaustisen ), celebrated yearly in July in Kaustinen, Finland, is the biggest folk music and dance festival in the Nordic countries. It was first celebrated in 1968. In its first year, the festival expected 6,000 visitors. The number was over three times the estimate, though. Nowadays the festival lasts a whole week and is visited by over 100,000 people. There are over 3,000 performers from Finland and other countries every year.

Finnish folk music has undergone a roots revival in the recent decades, and has also become a part of popular music. In the field of classical and contemporary art music, Finland has produced a proportionally exceptional number of musicians and composers. Pelimanni music is the Finnish version of the Nordic folk dance music, and it is tonal. It came to Finland from Central Europe via Scandinavia, starting in the 17th century, and in the 19th century, it replaced the Kalevalaic tradition. Pelimanni music was generally played on the fiddle and clarinet. Well-known Finnish folk music groups of today in the Kaustinen tradition include JPP, Frigg (although part Norwegian), and Troka. A group more focused on the earlier Kalevala singing traditions and the kantele is Värttinä. Another important folk musician of today is the accordionist Maria Kalaniemi.
Kaustinen Folk Music Festival works in cooperation with Finnish Hearing Associations. Among the portraited players are baroque violinist Kreeta-Maria Kentala, whose roots are firmly in the pelimanni ground of Kaustinen and who has performed on international stages like last year’s London Proms. Welcome to join! – During the whole week we have all sorts of program going on from early in the morning until late in the night, says Anne-Mari Hakamäki. Kaustinen also presents the best of Finnish folk dance groups, fromSiepakat to Motora as well as international dance guests among others from Estonia. The core of the festival is an impressing amount of pelimanni players from whole Finland.
