Excellent re-creation of the the famous Paul Whiteman concert. Vince Giordano contributed to this concert. One of the more "unusual" numbers is "Land of Hope and Glory" played with a banjo as rhythm instrument when the concert was performed in England. One person found this helpful. Firstly, this is a wonderfully important piece of history, the reconstruction of Paul Whiteman's landmark 1924 Aeolian Hall concert, at which Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue made its premiere. As the final piece, it winds up what is a grand concert unto itself - there isn't a bad bit in the bunch. Secondly, the little "featurettes" showcasing Zez Confrey and Victor Herbert are like little musical bouquets, gems placed in the perfect setting. I came to love Confrey's work thanks to this album, and though I had long loved Herbert, his "Suite of Serenades" was.

Paul Whiteman's ''Experiment in Modern Music'' at Aeolian Hall in February 1924 has been remembered until now only because it introduced George Gershwin's ''Rhapsody in Blue,'' which Whiteman had commissioned for the occasion. Most of the rest of the program was an attempt by Whiteman to demonstrate the ways in which he was making ''discordant jazz'' palatable. He has now recorded it digitally on a two-disk album, ''The Birth of Rhapsody in Blue'' (Musicmasters LP 20113X/ 14T; cassette 40113-4; CD 60113-4).
