This second album by Elise Witt and Small Family Orchestra ranks with the best. Produced in Atlanta, it features an eclectic repertoire (international, early jazz and blues, contemporary folk), beautiful clear solos by Ms. Witt, tight vocal harmony and unique instrumentation (generally Ms. Witt on guitar; Mary Witt, French horn; Rick Ruggles, mandolin; Steve Harris, violin; and Beth Heidelberg, clarinet). The orchestra achieves a European feel through combinations of instruments such as clarinet, accordion, French horn, violin, and flute, a soft-toned rich latticework of bistro sound. This is excruciatingly romantic on the ethnic songs. Elise Witt has a beautiful voice, particularly suited to interpreting poetry in song. Additional information.
Elise Witt and Small Family Orchestra played an amiable, homey concert Monday at Dance Theater Workshop. The five-member group collects songs from south of the Mason-Dixon line down to Central America and arranges them informally but precisely for voices, guitar, violin, mandola, clarinets, French horn and cello. Most of the arrangements center on Ms. Witt's sweet mezzo-soprano and touch on Southern traditions, from mountain gospel singing to ragtimey jazz. And as musicians, the quintet is competent but not virtuosic. Still, in such folky music good-heartedness counts for a lot, and listening to Small Family Orchestra is like dropping in on a well-organized hootenanny.
Singer-Guitarist ELISE WITT was born in Switzerland, raised in North Carolina, and since 1977 has made her home in Atlanta. Elise's training is as eclectic and varied as her music. She sang for 20 years with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Chamber Chorus under the direction of choral master Robert Shaw, as well as in the Robert Shaw Singers, which was the Resident Choir at Spivey Hall, and performed annually at Carnegie Hall. Elise has studied with masters of improvisation Bobby McFerrin, David Darling (founder of Music for People), and is currently part of a 16-voice ensemble engaged in intensive study with master teacher and singer Rhiannon.
