Canned Heat became one of the most popular American bands of the early 70s, combining a genuine feeling for the blues whilst also being commercially successful with a string of memorable hit singles. Founder members Bob Hite, Al Blind Owl Wilson and Henry Vestine are all now dead, but their spirit lives on in recordings like this classic 1972 release, packed with excellent material, from boogie to the blues.
A couple of summers ago, when Blind Owl Wilson overdosed; well, it looked like curtains for Canned Heat. The band added Harvey Mandel as lead guitarist and dropped a live album onto the market. After that LP whisked into oblivion, so did Canned Heat. But wait, just released is Historical Figures and Ancient Heads complete with new member Joel Scott Hill at vocals and guitars, Harvey Mandel, who since left the band, is back for guitar work, and Little Richard himself. What’s a critic to do? The band has retired the boogie theme for a more ballsy rock ‘n blues format.
Canned Heat is a blues-rock/boogie rock band that formed in Los Angeles, California, USA, in 1965. The group has been noted for its owninterpretations of blues material as well as for efforts to promote the interest in this type of music and its original artists. It was launched by two blues enthusiasts, Alan Wilson and Bob Hite, who took the name from Tommy Johnson's 1928 "Canned Heat Blues", a song about analcoholic who had desperately turned to drinking Sterno, generically called "canned heat"
Canned Heat's second long-player, Boogie with Canned Heat (1968), pretty well sums up the bona fide blend of amplified late-'60s electric rhythm and blues, with an expressed emphasis on loose and limber boogie-woogie
