Hex is the debut studio album by British post-rock band Bark Psychosis. It was released on 14 February 1994 by Circa Records in the United Kingdom, and on 11 March 1994 by Caroline Records in the United States. Reception to Hex was generally positive

Finding new inspiration, bands were beginning to experiment with techniques as the digital age took over

A masterpiece of unrivalled beauty and complexity, Bark Psychosis' Hex channels the experimentation of the group's prior singles into a more controlled setting; a series of atmospheric set pieces, the songs find a common ground between accepted musical formulas and avant innovation - at first glance, tracks like "Big Shot" and "Eyes & Smiles" appear tightly structured, yet they avoid the dynamics.

However, when Bark Psychosis came along with Hex, post rock finally developed a name for itself and what an album Hex proved to be. Boasting a lush sound and a truly masterful array of evocative songs, Hex exists as an influential masterpiece and if closely examined, one could easily see how Explosions In The Sky gets some of their influence

Bark Psychosis is a band from east London, England formed in 1986. Graham Sutton is the core of the group, supported by a dynamic roster of musicians. The line up for the seminal album "Hex" was Graham Sutton, Daniel Gish, John Ling, and Mark Simnett. Current members include Sutton, Colin Bradley, Lee Harris (formerly with Talk Talk), and others.

On their 1994 debut, Hex, Bark Psychosis are listening to each other, thinking about each other's responses to music. You can pick this up in the use of stereo in the recording of Hex, with a web of statements and replies between the channels between different percussion patterns and bass. And John Ling's bass itself in these recordings plays a humble, accenting but key role in the record's overall mood – the only time it really becomes a feature is on 'Big Shot', where it is ominous and propulsive. The pacing of Hex is surely influenced by the natural acoustics of St John's Church in Stratford, where it was recorded. Making an album in an unusual building can seem like a gimmick if the musicians aren't paying attention to their surroundings. With Hex there's a genuine sense of exploration, of inhabiting the space as they compose in it.

No insert with band photo and credits in my copy. Also no sticker.
Looks like there are some defective pressings out there. Can't speak for anyone but myself, but my copy was warm, clear and dead quiet. Probably the best this album is ever going to sound
what was wrong with the original though? It sounded perfect, Why remaster? What is this remastering mallarkey going ahn???
By this for Pendulum Man alone a brilliant dark moody soundscape full of restrained tension.....bliss will follow.
I have received original 94' pressing for only 39€! Sounds amazing! So happy:)
Very Nice. I am definitely looking for an original copy. Great record.
Mine just arrived after almost 5 months in transport (I blame our awful postal service). Disc 1 is very clean, but with very few isolated pops, disc 2 is kinda crackly, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment. Overall, I'm very happy with this pressing. I was hoping for the records to be 180 grams for some reason, they're very lightweight, I guess it's for the best, in order to prevent severe seam splits.
Side A and side C have a lot of noise, not to mention edge warping on both records. I'm glad I still have my original pressing.
Any word on a possible re-press of Codename Dustsucker? I'd buy that in a heartbeat.
Up for pre-order now from Norman Records and others...
I would say that this release is suffering from a lack of quality control. Lots of pops and cracks which is especially annoying in the many quiet parts.
The last couple of minutes of A2 - a rather quiet section - crackles for me. There is some odd visible dotting on the disc itself. Otherwise the pressing is fine, but it's very irksome.

Same here. What you describe sounds like non-fill (which would fit how it sounds) but I can't actually see any on mine and thought it was down to a slightly scuffed spot in the same area. It would've helped if it was pressed a tad louder. I would've thought at 45rpm that would've been possible without sacrificing any dynamics but then I don't master records for a living.. I just listen to a lot of them.
The best and most important reissue for a long time. Great sound on this double vinyl. Maybe the best album of the 90s. Get it.
The original CD had a 15kHz tone on most of the songs, and I was disappointed to find that this issue is uncorrected on the 2017 remaster.
my copy skipped a lot. Does anyone have the same problem?I will use a new turntable to play it again---------------------------------------------------------------------------------Updated on September 27th:I used a new turntable and everything is fine now. Great sound quality. Very pleased
cdfreak1 Skipping ‘a lot’ usually hints at more of an alignment or cartridge/stylus issue than a defect, I second the suggestion to check your equipment. Very pleased with my copy, but also wish this was in a gatefold sleeve. you are right. I used a new turntable and everything is fine now. Great sound quality. Very pleased
Both discs are warped for me too.. just reached out for an exchange.

+1 no issues here. check your VTF and alignment. might be off somewhere.
Mine sounded very good with no skips. Very pleased with this overall. Just wished they had a gatefold so that both LPs don't have to sit in the same slot.
2017 Remaster sounds better (if that was possible) than the original release. Just listening to them back to back, it's an incredible piece of work and shows exactly how you should do a reissue and improve on perfection.
Don't really agree with you here. The 2017 remaster is a loudness-war remaster: dynamics have been reduced significantly, the album is louder, the bass is unnaturally louder compared to the original. The original master was absolutely perfect and suited the album's articulate sound design.
ABSOLUTELY stunning. Not only a great album, but the 45rpm pressing is perfectly mastered and sounds so rich, full and warm. Even better than the original to my ear. I've only had this on CD for a while so it sounded so fresh today
Just got the 45rpm 2LP reissue today from the UK, two weeks ahead of schedule. SOUNDS AMAZING. No listing for it yet on Discogs...
Lucky bastard. It's gonna take at least another month or two for me to come in the mail, since it's an international purchase. I honestly can't wait.
This is one of the noisiest pressings that I own. Did a heavy duty cleaning and there are still crackles and pops all over the thing. A real disappointment
2xLP 45rpm repress coming soon, can I get a halleluja?!
Got mine a couple days ago, 16 days prior to release date for some reason. It sounds AMAZING. So clean and tight with rich bass. The 45rpm really helps.
One of the most beautiful and important albums ever recorded. I'm not kidding.
