Personally, Stony Brook was the ideal balance between close proximity to my family and a new environment. Campus is only a 1 hour drive away from home, however, I don’t find myself feeling obligated to see my family every weekend. On a positive note, due its proximity and the amazing public transportation services on Long Island I have gone home on weekdays just to eat dinner with the family. Classes here are really hard and you must keep up with the material otherwise you are going to be as depressed as the kids that are sitting at the library the night before the final! One experience I will always remember is meeting all of my friends. Because of that one incident, I am able to have fun and make the best of my time here at Stony Brook. When I first came to Stony Brook, I didn't have an overall opinion of the school. But now after a year and a half, I have made my own opinion based on experience.

Stony Brook also offers a merit-based Presidential Scholarship that covers the cost of in-state tuition and fees. I happen to be a recipient of this scholarship. I don’t think it’s very common at all, and I’m not just saying that to brag. I haven’t heard a single person talking about this scholarship, though that may be because it’s kinda awkward to say that you’re going to school for free while everyone else around you is complaining about their student loans. In short, there are no full rides at Stony Brook, but there is full tuition, and it’s not easy to come by unless you qualify for the Excelsior Scholarship, in which case it is guaranteed-if you’re accepted to the school, that is, which is also becoming less and less easy to do. As the post-apocalyptic dystopian novels like to say, may the odds be ever in your favor.
That Stony Brook is a wonderful place to be a resident. It’s a wonderful place to learn and you can get everything out of it that you want to in a residency. In terms of the environment, Stony Brook focuses on people growing not just as doctors, but also as part of our community. Patrick Lynch, MD, nephrology fellow. Part of evaluating where you are going to wind up for your training program is looking at yourself and finding out what you want to do with the rest of your life.
