I've always compared PROJEKT with early 4AD - a bit of a misleading comparison when you think that BAUHAUS, MODERN ENGLISH, LEWIS & GILBERT and the COCTEAU TWINS released material at around the same time. But the similarity holds water when if, like me, you felt you could buy ANYTHING on that label & be pleased with what you found. In many ways, EDEN's album is Gothic without the Rock - dramatic works with deep sonorous vocals, set against distinctive compositions using cello, hammered dulcimer, drifty atmospherics and sharply gated drums. Full of somnific dream images, this is a journey through an imaginary Last Crusade - combining almost Eastern mystery with a Neo-Medieval plainsong style. This is the new Folk music, sucking up it's influences from the many cultures which make up the common SuperCulture which is America. The brevity of this mini-album perhaps helps make the tracks familiar to one's memory (as compared to the vast atmosphere-laden stretches of, say, the BLACK TAPE FOR A BLUE GIRL albums). In many ways it sounds a little like some of the more mainstream Eighties mist-mongers - say JAPAN or MARC ALMOND only with lashings of dramatic dark tones. If you like the music of, say, ATARAXIA, then this is an absolute MUST. If you like most music from ROSENTHAL's label, then this is a rewarding addition to your collection. Great dramatic atmospheres - more sad & wistful than dark & dreadful! Originally reviewed for Soft Watch.
