Single Mothers’ new album, Through a Wall, is maybe their most vicious yet. While Our Pleasure drifted into poppier and more experimental territories, Through a Wall is a straight-up hardcore record-fast and punky with Thomson sounding more pissed-off than ever. Through a Wall captures a moment in time for Single Mothers that might never exist again. With the band’s open-invite policy for members, new energy flows in and out, creating a different version of their sound for each record, all anchored by the constant of Thomson and his sneering, knives-out attitude. For the most part, I stick to singing and my quote-unquote lyrics and just let the band do its own thing, he says. Because I have no control over it at this point. Through a Wall is out today.

Single Mothers first came to people’s wider attention when Touché Amoré’s Jeremy Bolm released their self-titled second EP on his own label, Secret Voice, in 2012. Two years later, the band released their debut album, Negative Qualities – a shuddering, forthright blast of visceral hardcore, that saw a whole bunch of hype swell up around them, before things went quiet again. Literally – Drew released a series of home recordings and a couple of EPS of some acoustic songs, showing off a very different side to his talents. And almost quicker than a Single Mothers song, the band are back with a third album, Through A Wall. And while it sounds very angry indeed, as Drew explains, all might not quite be as it seem. irst of all, why did you decided to surprise release Through A Wall? Drew Thomson: We did that when we put the Meltdown EP out.

Through A Wall (2018). Ontario's Single Mothers rarely miss the mark for me. Since I heard "Winter Coats" over five years ago I knew I'd be holding them a very high standard, and it's really amazing to see how they've lived up to expectations every release. Through A Wall dropped as a surprise and what I love most about it is it's so bold in that it goes right back to the sound of old after last year's Our Pleasure seemed to take a more catchy, melodic and dare I say, poppy route.
