Carl Craig & Radio Slave @ Awakenings 26-11-10 Gashouder Amsterdam. Carl Craig Biography. Dancefloor experimentalist and top Detroit techno producer Carl Craig has few equals in terms of the artistry, influence, and diversity of his recordings. Few others have recorded so much quality music in such a variety of styles as has Craig, who jammed distorted beatbox samples into lo-fi electro riggings, crafted epic house tracks like his remix of Tori Amos' "God," and recorded the most sublime Detroit techno since godfathers Juan Atkins and Derrick May were at their peak. On his return to the . Craig released several R&S tracks on the Crackdown EP, recorded as Psyche for May's Transmat Records. Craig then founded Retroactive Records with Damon Booker, and despite working days at a copy shop, continued recording in his parents' basement.
Psyche (Carl Craig) has been played on NTS over 30 times, featured on 27 episodes and was first played on 28 September 2012. In the early 90s, the name Psyche was also used as an alias of Detroit techno artist Carl Craig. Under this early pseudonym the legendary Detroit based techno producer released a few 12"s on Transmat - later compiled onto 'Elements', alongside other material written under his BFC alias, and released on Craig's own Planet E label.
Though Carl Craig was born too late to be the former, he's unequivocally become the latter. Craig began making his own tracks in the late 1980s after working at the studio of techno innovator Derrick May. Working under a variety of pseudonyms (Psyche and Paperclip People, among them) while recording for and guiding his label Planet E, Craig has flowed effortlessly from ambient drones to proto-broken beat future jazz and beyond. Early classics reimagined drum 'n' bass (1992's "Bug in a Bass Bin") and reinvented minimal house music (1994's "Throw").
