This Sporting Life (Album). Musicologist Ian Whitcomb wrote, recorded, and performed a song in 1965 called "You Turn Me On," a comical rock beat song that basically was satirizing the manufactured teen idol rock and roll fare that was popular with the British Invasion. Little did he dream that he himself would briefly become the rock and roll idol he was mocking, and toured with groups like the Kinks and the Rolling Stones. You Turn Me On" became a smash hit, so his record company told him to make an entire album of music like that. With Barry Richardson Vocals and Harmonica; Mick Molloy (Lead Guitar); 'Deke'O'Brien (Rhythm Guitar) (I'll never forget those two Gibson ES335s!); Peter Adler (Son of Larry) on Saxophone; Ian McGarry on Drums and a Bass player whose name I forget.

The Sporting Life is an album by singer Diamanda Galás and t John Paul Jones, released on September 6, 1994 by record label Mute. Trouser Press described the album as "her most stimulating and broadly appealing work ye. Skótoseme" (Galás/Jones) – 6:27. Do You Take This Man?" (Galás/Jones) – 6:09. Dark End of the Street" (Chips Moman/Dan Penn) – 2:42. You're Mine" (Galás) – 5:10. Tony" (Galás) – 5:37. Devil's Rodeo" (Galás/Jones/Pete Thomas) – 5:37.

All of Whitcomb's hits - "You Turn Me On," "N-E-R-V-O-U-S," "Where Did Robinson Crusoe Go With Friday on Saturday Night," "The Sporting Life" - are featured, along with many singles, album cuts and a handful of unreleased tracks. It's true that Whitcomb's jaunty music-hall romps and silly humor can wear thin on some listeners, but there's no argument that this disc is the best CD collection yet assembled of his career.
