Richard Strauss - Kent Nagano, Göteborgs Symfoniker - Eine Alpensinfonie, Op. 64 FLAC album
Album · 2016 · 22 Songs. This performance evokes the power and awe of Strauss’ beloved mountains. The Göteborgs Symfoniker’s long affinity for the German composer is clearly evident in the passionate reading of the work, which traces a wanderer’s sunrise-to-sunset journey through Alpine terrain. But we love this recording most for its detailed clarity; Nagano not only unleashes the explosive power of the enormous ensemble, but also brings subtlety and delicate emotion to the score’s pastoral beauty. Eine Alpensinfonie, O. When Kent Nagano was appointed as Principal Guest Conductor starting in the autumn of 2013, one of the ideas turned into a project: performing and recording major orchestral works of Richard Strauss in connection with the composer's 150th anniversary in 2014. Having worked for a long time as Music Director of the Bayerische Staatsoper, Kent Nagano has unique insights into Strauss's music and the Strauss tradition, and can draw on information from authentic sources within the Strauss family.
This 2014 performance by Kent Nagano and the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra delivers the sweep and majesty of the music with an extraordinary depth of sound and the vibrant, Wagnerian tone colors of Strauss' music in his prime. One of the criticisms sometimes made about Eine Alpensinfonie is its resemblance to film music, though anything of this work's complexity and power wouldn't be found in cinema until many years later.

Richard STRAUSS (1864-1949) Eine Alpensinfonie, Op. 64 (1911-15) Göteborgs Symfoniker/Kent Nagano rec. November 2014, Göteborger Konzerthaus FARAO CLASSICS B108091. In January 2014 I had the rare opportunity to hear Eine Alpensinfonie in a thrilling performance at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall. It was a joint venture by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the Hallé under Juanjo Mena. I say ‘rare’ as this tone poem, the last of Strauss’s large orchestral works, calls for 130-140 players, one of the reasons it’s not programmed that often.
An Alpine Symphony (Eine Alpensinfonie), Op. 64, is a tone poem for a very large orchestra written by German composer Richard Strauss in 1915. It is one of Strauss's largest non-operatic works; the score calls for about 125 players and a typical performance usually lasts around 50 minutes. The program of An Alpine Symphony depicts the experiences of eleven hours (from daybreak just before dawn to the following nightfall) spent climbing an Alpine mountain.
