Motion is the debut LP by The Cinematic Orchestra, released on 27 September 1999 on Ninja Tune. The album's concept came from core band member, Jason Swinscoe, who had amassed various samples - drum patterns, basslines and melody samples - that had inspired and influenced him. He then presented them to a group of musicians to learn and then improvise around. The resulting draft tracks were then re-mixed on computer by Swinscoe to create the finished album.

One hundred noir film loops flip back and through, occupying your head. Welcome to the world of 'Motion' a new (and old) type of audio-visual project where your ears create images.

The Cinematic Orchestra is a British nu jazz and electronic music group, created in 1999 by Jason Swinscoe. The group is signed to independent record label Ninja Tune. The Cinematic Orchestra have produced four studio albums, Motion (1999), Every Day (2002), Ma Fleur (2007) and To Believe (2019), and two film soundtrack albums, Man with a Movie Camera (2003) and for The Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingos (2009).

Whether to categorize Motion as a jazz or electronica album is an intriguing conundrum, because it truly turns out to be a combination of both musical forms, and it is an unequivocally brilliant combination, at that

They scored Disney’s feature length nature documentary The Crimson Wing including the track ‘Arrival of the Birds’ which featured in the closing scene of the Oscar Winning Stephen Hawking biopic "The Theory of Everything". They also released a Late Night Tales compilation featuring music from Flying Lotus, Burial and Björk. It’s hard to believe it’s been 12 years since The Cinematic Orchestra released their last studio album, Ma Fleur in 2007. Did you achieve what you hoped to in the time since?

One of my favorite records. I got this when it came out and it blew me away. I had started to collect ECM records at the time and I bought Abercrombie's Sorcery record at the same time and everything clicked. The way they used the samples and played over them is the antithesis of my tastes. It links hip-hop and jazz together in a sincere and forward thinking way. I can't gush more about this record.
Wow! No review. I can only guess people feel the music speaks for itself.I caught Giles Peterson DJing one night in London and he played some of the tracks from this LP. I was duly blown away and managed to ask the MC he had that night what he had been playing. He just said look out for Motion in the shops soon. I bought it from Reckless as soon as I saw it and It didn't leave my turntable for so many months. It is a masterpiece of manipulation. How quite disparate pieces of music can be brought together and sound like it's a single band just blew me away. Pure genius IMHO - there are glimpses of this on Everyday but Motion for me will always remain as Swincoes' best compostion.
