Beirut's Zach Condon decided to write the album after a rough tour in Brazil, where he suffered a perforated eardrum and was involved in a stage invasion
Another rose wilts in East Harlem And uptown downtown a thousand miles between us She's waiting for the night to fall Let it fall, I'll never make it in time. Sound is the colour I know, oh, Sound is what keeps me before your eyes, And sound of your breath in the cold, And oh, the sound will bring me home again.

Part of The Rip Tide and a two song EP both released in 2011, though it was first performed in 2009 at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. Lead singer and songwriter Zach Condon stated at the time that this is a new song slash really really old song, because I think I wrote this when I was 17. Condon lived partly in New York City at the time. The song represents a marked change from Beirut’s previously vague lyrics and coincides with Condon finally settling down after wandering the world for years on end. "East Harlem" Track Info.

In today’s post teasing Blondie’s Beirut collab, we mentioned East Harlem b/w Goshen, a new single that marks Beirut’s first new songs since March Of The Zapotec. Zach Condon wrote the uke tune when he was 17 but first started playing it live in 2009. You can also sample Goshen on that page.
The new Beirut song ‘East Harlem’ debuted while I was away last weekend and today details of the new album have been released. Entitled The Rip Tide, the band’s followup to 2007′s The Flying Club Cup (first release since March of the Zapotec EP in 2009) and third album proper is said to be the most introspective of all of Zach Condon’s albums to date. It will feature contributions from Heather Trost of A Hawk and a Hacksaw and Sharon Van Etten as well as the Beirut band. Musically, songs have a harmonic immediacy that contrasts the complexities of Zapotec’s Mexican full orchestra compositions.
