The Gate is a 2011 studio album by Kurt Elling, produced by Don Was. on November 30th 2011, the album received a Nomination in 54th Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Jurek said "The Gate presents Elling at the top of his game; it is a song cycle that is mesmerizing and mysterious as it is provocative and compelling.
On The Gate, Elling presents nine songs gathered from rock, pop, soul, and jazz. Produced by Don Was, Elling is accompanied by longtime pianist Laurence Hobgood, saxophonist Bob Mintzer, guitarist John McLean, bassist John Pattitucci, alternating drummers Terreon Gulley and Kobie Watkins, and percussionist Lenny Castro. The material here is evocative of Elling's all encompassing view of jazz as an ever-innovative popular music. It opens with a subtle, deeply emotive and poetic reading of King Crimson's "Matte Kudasai.
On this sleek 2011 album, singer Kurt Elling reinforces the notion that jazz needn’t be tied to old-fashioned material. His band aids his transformation of unlikely material, bringing mahogany richness to the King Crimson ballad Matte Kudasai or boldly remaking The Beatles’ Norwegian Wood as a jazz-pop marvel à la Joni Mitchell. Despite a version of Earth Wind & Fire's "After The Love Is Gone" that is so good you can play it for days, this dream-team collaboration between jazz singer Elling and big-time weirdo producer Don Was delivers less than it promises. The choice of songs is both conventional and odd (a naff "Norwegian Wood", a cheesy "Golden Lady"), while the production is relatively anonymous. Elling sings well, as always, but there's no advance on his earlier "Nightmoves". If only we could hear. More about Jazz Music Norway Ronnie Scott.
