Our Tune of the Day is taken from Devon Folklore Tapes Vo. (the open-ended project of Ian Humberstone, David Chatton Barker) which sees their special reissue on vinyl this month. This inaugural volume resulted from a postal correspondence between David Chatton Barker and Ian Humberstone in 2011, and was released as a split cassette housed in a hollowed-out hardback book later that year.

If Ian Humberstone and David Chatton Barker take a sympathetic view of the two witches, and broadly use song form to esquisse their story, the second volume of the Devon Folklore Tapes, entitled Graves, embarks along a more tortuous and phantasmagorical route, in both style and content. Former Demdike Stare collaborator Anworth Kirk and the mysterious D. Orphan (accompanied by a no less enigmatic band called The White Funz) take a side each of the tape (or one 10 vinyl disk) each and explore the myths surrounding two landmark graves of Devon. Because Folklore Tapes are doing more than any others to unveil the ghostly heritage of the British Isles, and the results so far have never been nothing less than riveting.
First part of my 2014's digest. A selection of songs taken from my favourite releases of the year. M. Sage, "A Singular Continent" (Patient Sounds). Howe I Seaman, "Minor Distance" (Cotton Goods). Elodie, "Miniatures Persanes" (La Scie Dorée). Jacob Kirkegaard, "40 Days Of Silence" (Von Archives) . Ian Humberstone & David Chatton Barker, "Theo Brown And The Folklore Of Dartmoor" (Folklore Tapes). Alessandro Cortini, "Sonno" (Hospital Productions).
