Lloyd Cole & The Commotions - Collected Recordings 1983-1989 FLAC album
Lloyd Cole and the Commotions were a British rock/pop band that formed in Glasgow, Scotland in 1982. Between 1984 and 1989, the band scored four Top 20 albums and five Top 40 singles in the UK. After they broke up in 1989, Cole embarked on a solo career but the band reformed briefly in 2004 to perform a 20th anniversary mini-tour of the UK and Ireland. The band were formed whilst Cole (who was born in Derbyshire, England) was studying at the University of Glasgow.
The career of Lloyd Cole & The Commotions began with a fortuitous false start. Their first single, Down At The Mission, was pulled at the eleventh hour when the band signed to Polydor, and one can only assume they’ve been counting their blessings ever since. Heard here (officially) for the first time, this frantic slice of blue-eyed funk reveals a subsequently unexplored fascination with cheesy synths, shrieking falsetto and slap bass. Collected Recordings is a warts and all excavation of one of the most idiosyncratic and sporadically brilliant bands of the ’80s. Running to 66 tracks and five CDs, it includes remastered versions of the group’s three albums – Rattlesnakes (which has never sounded better), Easy Pieces and Mainstream – plus two further discs of B-Sides, Remixes And Outtakes and Demos And Rarities.

There was one typo on the Commotions box set –. Somehow or other the US version of Rattlesnakes was. There was no extra mastering compression or EQ, which is why the album sounds bigger and roomier. The mastering done in 1984 made the tracks tighter, and smaller. This is more noticeable on Four Flights Up and Patience.
Collected Recordings 1983-1989 is a 5CD+DVD box set that contains newly remastered versions of the three studio albums (Rattlesnakes, Easy Pieces and Mainstream), a disc of B-sides/remixes, a further CD of largely previously unreleased demos and to finish the set off, a DVD featuring all 10 promo videos and eight TV performances (Top Of The Pops . Have been waiting for this since it was first mentioned here. The Lloyd Cole and the Commotions (+Lloyds first sole album) are amongst the few vinyl albums that survived my Vinyl cull due to space a couple of years back. Incidentally the first time I heard a Lloyd Cole track was when Nick Heyward ( of HC100 fame) played a friend and I ‘Perfect Skin’ on the cassette player in his car. I was (and am) a huge fan of Nick’s first solo album (North of a Miracle) and so I was very excited when a friend saw him drive past sometime circa 1984 in South Kensington London. After breaking up in 1989, Lloyd Cole embarked on a solo career. The band reformed briefly in 2004 to perform a 20th anniversary mini-tour of the UK and Ireland.

"There was one typo on the Commotions box set –
Somehow or other the US version of Rattlesnakes was used as a reference for sleeve notes. The US (original Geffen, not subsequent Capitol) version contained several Rik Ocasek re-mixes. And the box set sleeve notes have this credit.
To be clear – there are no re-mixes on the re-mastered Rattlesnakes. The original 1/2″ tape from Genetic Studios were used. Transferred flat to digital and the CD was mastered from this. There was no extra mastering compression or EQ, which is why the album sounds bigger and roomier. The mastering done in 1984 made the tracks tighter, and smaller. This is more noticeable on Four Flights Up and Patience. I consulted the band, we all prefer it this way."
