Breakthrough is the second studio album by American singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat. The album was released on August 19, 2009 through Universal Republic Records. The follow-up to her successful debut album, Coco (2007), Breakthrough was developed in late 2008 when Caillat returned to her home after two years on tour, with the singer setting up a "writing camp" with songwriters and producers in Hawaii and writing over 40 songs for the record.
Breakthrough summarizes his recent creative mode pretty definitively, manifesting in a high-quality dose of doom-struck instrumental hip-hop. It's taken nearly a decade for . s Gaslamp Killer to release his debut album, though he's hardly been slacking in the interim. Very few artists these days manage to sell 2 million copies of an album. Count Southern California singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat among the exceptions. Her debut effort, 2007’s Coco, just went double platinum, propelled by the likable, lazy charm of low-key hits "Bubbly" and "Realize.
Fleetwood Mac released their ninth album, Heroes Are Hard to Find, in the fall of 1974. Although it gave the band their first Top 40 hit in the . it also led to yet another in the seemingly endless series of lineup changes that had dogged them since co-founding guitarist Peter Green quit in 1970. But it also resulted in Fleetwood Mac, which changed the course of their history. Buckingham and Nicks were already a recording act in their own right, although their self-titled debut album had tanked after its 1973 release and Nicks was working as a waitress while they figured out their next move. He was standing there grooving to this searing guitar solo and he needed a guitar player.
The third album by Jack and Meg White was the right dynamite for a mainstream breakthrough. Jack’s Delta-roadhouse fantasies, Detroit-garage-rock razzle and busted-love lyricism, as well as Meg’s toy-thunder drumming all peaked at once. 496. Boz Scaggs, ‘Boz Scaggs’.
That album spawned three hit singles and gained her a large following within the pop community and two years later she is back with her sophomore release, Breakthrough. With everything that was done right on her debut, it should come as no surprise that very little has changed on her second album. While there is nothing spectacular on this album, there is also not a single bad track. In a time when labels are perfectly content to load an album with a few singles and a bunch of filler, it’s refreshing to be able to listen to this from beginning to end without having to skip any tracks. It’s also refreshing due to its light-hearted, upbeat songs that only seem intent on creating a smile and a feeling of enjoyment.
