Charles Dutoit often sounds better on disc than he does live. The reason for this is simple: he loves to play to the audience, and the result is all kinds of wild gesticulating that the orchestra knows perfectly well to ignore. Sometimes they ignore him completely, to the peril of the performance at hand. In the studio, however, there is no audience and the conductor is free to focus on the music. Dutoit has a real affection for The Planets and his performance is vital, insightful, and recorded in resplendent digital sound. Holst: The Planets, O. 2 - 6. Uranus, the Magician by Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal and Charles Dutoit.

Holst: The Planets, O. 2 - 7. Neptune, The Mystic by Le Choeur des Femmes de L'Orchestre de Montréal & Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal & Charles Dutoit. I was seeking to replace the first digital music of The Planets on CD which apparently is lost or vanished in places unknown. I believe the music from the lost recordings was performed by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and it must therefore be the standard by which I will judge the work of Mssr. Dutoit and the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal. I have only had time for a cursory listening, but for all intents and purposes, I shall most likely give this effort my highest marks and regards.

Regarded as a masterful interpretation since its appearance in 1987, Charles Dutoit's award-winning recording of Gustav Holst's The Planets deserves all the praise it has received from fans and critics alike. Dutoit takes the Montréal Symphony Orchestra through the work's seven astrological movements with spot-on accuracy and determined drive, so the musicians stay alert and their energy never flags throughout this dazzling tone poem
