Norodom Sihanouk (Khmer: នរោត្តម សីហនុ; 31 October 1922 – 15 October 2012) was a Cambodian royal, politician, composer and filmmaker who was King of Cambodia from 24 April 1941 to 2 March 1955 and 24 September 1993 to 7 October 2004; both reigns ended in abdication. In Cambodia, he is also known as Samdech Euv (Khmer: សម្តេចឪ, father prince). Until the early years of his rule, his family ruled over the French Protectorate of Cambodia.
Prince Norodom Sihanouk (born October 31, 1922; died October 15 2012) has ruled Cambodia until the coup of General Lon Nol in 1970. Following the coup, he joined the left-wing guerilla opposition Khmer Rouge, who took over the country in 1975. He was kept under house arrest during the genocidal Democratic Kampuchea regime (1975-1979). After their ousting by Vietnamese troops, he went into exile in China and North Korea. He came back to Cambodia in 1991. He was a close friend of Mao Zedong and Kim Il Sung

Norodom Sihanouk was the only child born of the union between Norodom Suramarit and Sisowath Kossamak. His parents, who heeded the royal court astrologer's advice that he risked dying at a young age if he was raised under parental care, placed him under the care of Kossamak's grandmother, Pat. When Pat died, Kossamak brought Sihanouk to live with his paternal grandfather, Norodom Sutharot. Sutharot delegated parenting responsibilities to his daughter, Norodom Ket Kanyamom
