There I found this album "Debussy's Greatest Hits" by Columbia Stereo Masterworks (its original vinyl version) and I bought it instantly. When I brought to my uncle's house and first played it on his turntable, I was instantly awed and mesmerized by the pieces Reverie, Arabesque No. 1 and The Girl with the Flaxen hair. Clair de Lune I already knew, and Ormandy's version was great, but a bit too fast and too powerful when compared to the one I already knew. The Golliwog's Cakewalk (the only piano piece in the album) was charming and catchy, but it seemed a bit out.
In celebration of Claude Debussy's upcoming birthday (August 22, 1862), I dedicated Practice Notes 63 to him with "How to Sound Like Claude Debussy. Like the other videos in this series, these obviously just cover the surface layer of Debussy's music - I am in no way trying to diminish his musical depth with this type of analysis or breakdown. Think of it as a sort of how-to "hack" tutorial on playing or writing something in a style reminiscent of Debussy's music.

Discover Claude Debussy’s best music, and find out facts about his life in celebration of the 150th anniversary of his birth. Debussy went travelling with Tchaikovsky’s wealthy patroness, Nadezhda von Meck. In 1880 she sent Debussy’s Danse bohémienne to Tchaikovsky, but he wasn’t really sold on it: It is a very pretty piece, but it is much too short, he wrote. Not a single idea is expressed fully, the form is terribly shriveled, and it lacks unity. 5. Debussy wins the Prix de Rome.
Claude Debussy wrote his String Quartet in G minor, L 85, Op. 10 in 1893 when he was 31 years old. It is Debussy's only string quartet. The previous year Debussy had abandoned the opera Rodrigue et Chimène. He planned to write two string quartets, only one of which materialized. The string quartet was to be dedicated to composer Ernest Chausson, whose personal reservations eventually diverted the composer's original intentions.
