After the commercial disappointments of their albums "First Light" and "Sunnyvista", Richard and Linda Thompson had their backs against the wall. Needing to put out an album that would do well on the charts, they enlisted Gerry Rafferty (1/2 of Stealers Wheel and the artist behind the megahit "Baker Street") in 1980, who they were opening for at the time.
