Blue Note Records is an American jazz record label that is owned by Universal Music Group and operated with Decca Records. Established in 1939 by Alfred Lion and Max Margulis, it derives its name from the blue notes of jazz and the blues. Originally dedicated to recording traditional jazz and small group swing, from 1947 the label began to switch its attention to modern jazz.
This is the discography of Blue Note Records, the American jazz record label. Most of the records were studio recordings produced by Alfred Lion or Francis Wolff. The two main series were '1500', which ran from 1955 to 1958, and '4000', which ran . 958 to 1972. The 'BN-LA' series followed during the 1970s: this series contained many compilations and reissues in addition to new studio albums.

The artwork of the legendary Blue Note jazz record label has come to represent everything that is brilliant and innovative in album cover design. He was working for Esquire magazine when he did his debut for Blue Note, as co-designer with John Hermansader, was a cover for a ten-inch album by the Hank Mobley Quartet in late 1955, but the first album to carry the sole name Reid K. Miles was far from modern –a Sidney Bechet release a few months later
But there's one label that's essentially synonymous with jazz: Blue Note. And let’s give a hand to the incredible album art by Reid Miles. It went through numerous phases, first releasing 78 RPM records, then expanding into cohesive full-lengths during the jazz Renaissance in the 1950s and ’60s. In the ’70s it still held its own, but went dormant in 1979 after some label restructuring occurred under the EMI umbrella. It relaunched in 1985 with both legacy acts and new performers on its roster, and since, it’s expanded to include soul, hip-hop, pop and electronic acts alongside its roster of jazz performers.
Like any great Blue Note album of the 1950’s, everyone is high on heroin. Reefer madness was around the corner, so the possibility of grass is likely too. This album swings. He’s recorded with luminaries such as Steve Coleman, Jack DeJohnette and Vijay Iyer and released The Imagined Savior is Far Easier to Paint on Blue Note earlier this year.
