Beethoven: Piano Sonata N. In E Flat, O. - 4. Rondo (Poco allegretto e grazioso). The program ends with an out-of-the-way Beethoven sonata, no. 4 Op. Happily, Michelangeli plays it with full expression, like real Beethoven and not leftover Haydn. the first movement is supposed to be fast and lively (Allegro molto e con brio), but Michelangeli is much more studied and self-conscious. With him, that's usually a given, and one can either submit or resist.
Ludwig van Beethoven. The mood becomes more serious in the central trio section, churning as it does through E flat minor, but the passage is too brief to alter the movement's essentially lighthearted character. A light mood also characterizes the concluding rondo (Poco allegretto e grazioso). This is not the manic sort of finale that Beethoven would later indulge in, but a gentle frolic interrupted by a single stormy episode a quarter of the way through. Admittedly, this is an otherwise uneventful rondo, with the main subject and its variants dominating the remainder of the movement . Brahms: 4 Balladen Op. 10; Schubert: Sonate D 537; Beethoven: Sonate Op. Deutsche Grammophon.
And while there have been a few better recordings than Michelangeli's of the four Mozart piano concertos, Michelangeli's are at such an extraordinarily high level, so beautifully toned and so ethereally interpreted, that they are still among the best ever recorded. Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 4, in E♭ major, Op. 7, sometimes nicknamed the Grand Sonata, is dedicated to his student Babette, the Countess Keglevics. This piano sonata was composed in Bratislava, in 1796, in November, during his visit of Keglevich Palace in Bratislava. Beethoven named it Great Sonata, because it was published alone, which was unusual for the time.
