Live 1977-1979 collects recordings from performances at Max’s Kansas City and CBGB’s in New York, plus the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto. According to the press release, the album features almost every known Teenage Jesus and the Jerks composition. Teenage Jesus and the Jerks was comprised of Lunch, Bradly Field, Jim Sclavunos, Gordon Stevenson, Reck, and James Chance.

Teenage Jesus and the Jerks were an influential American no wave band, based in New York City, who formed part of the city's no wave movement. Lydia Lunch met saxophonist James Chance at CBGB and moved into his two-room apartment. She started to combine her poetry with acoustic guitar and was spurred to start a band after seeing one of Mars' earlier performances. Lunch found guitarist Reck at CBGB and recruited him as a drummer, later moving him to bass.

Led by singer/guitarist Lydia Lunch, the short-lived, NYC-based Teenage Jesus and the Jerks cultivated a visceral severity that redeemed its dearth of material. Compiling recordings from six shows - five in NYC and one in Toronto - Live 1977-1979 presents a convincing argument that stage Jerks might have been superior to studio Jerks. In the 94 minutes it takes to watch Blank City, director Celine Danhier’s 2009 No Wave documentary, one could convulse through the entirety of Teenage Jesus and the Jerks’ studio discography multiple times. Led by singer/guitarist Lydia Lunch, the short-lived, NYC-based Jerks cultivated a visceral severity that redeemed its dearth of material.
