It was recorded at the Nippon Budokan Hall on April 26, 2004 in Tokyo, Japan. Due to time constraints, the songs "The Great Debate", "Under a Glass Moon" and "Caught in a Web", which included an extended drum solo, were removed from the setlist at the last minute.

Touring to promote 2003’s ‘Train of Thought’, ‘Live at Budokan’ sees the band storm through a set of highly energetic and crushingly heavy material.

However, "Live at Budokan" is easily a lesser live album, and fans really only need the more recent, higher quality "Score" to get a better idea of the band's talents. I can recommend this to anyone that does or doesn't have a Dream Theater album to see what the band is all about. Technical wizardry at work here is with no flaws. I can't imagine what the people in the audience were going through while watching this perfect performance.

The 3rd live album of Dream Theater was recorded at the Budokan hall in Japan, in front of an ecstatic crowd. A lot of the material included on Live At Budokan comes from the Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence album. Highlights on the album include "Instrumedley", where all members successfully showcase their prowess on each of the band's instruments. John Petrucci's riffs are groovy and his solos are (as usual) second to none.

Live at Budokan 2017 was a live TV broadcast that only aired in Japan on September 11, 2017. The broadcast was of Dream Theater's performance at the Nippon Budokan for their Images, Words and Beyond World Tour. The band had previously recorded another album, Live at Budokan, at this venue. In 2004, Dream Theater released its live album Live at Budokan, and in either 2017 or 2018 the band will repeat the feat. While there's no release date attached to the album just yet, Dream Theater is currently plotting a new live album called Back To Budokan 2017. The album will feature an entire performance of Dream Theater's 1992 album Images & Words alongside some old and new songs, plus an entire performance of "A Change Of Seasons.
