John Leslie "Wes" Montgomery (March 6, 1923 – June 15, 1968) was an American jazz guitarist. Montgomery, like his idol, Charlie Christian, could play single-note lines like a horn player, but also incorporated chords and octaves in his solos. His jaw-dropping abilities made him seem super-human and he was soon hailed as one of the best jazz guitarists to have walked the planet, earning him top spot on this run down of the 50 best jazz guitarists ever. In March 1965 he recorded with Don Sebesky’s Orchestra at Rudy Van Gelder’s studio and the tracks made up the album "Bumpin’", becoming the first of his ten albums to make the Billboard Pop charts. The album proved difficult for Montgomery to make as when he was recording with the full orchestra he was unable to get the results he wanted.
