It's not entirely developed in some parts, but there's enough texture, melody, and smarts in here to make it an excellent alb.
EVOL is the third studio album by the American alternative rock band Sonic Youth. It was released in May 1986 by SST Records, the band's first release on the label. The album is notable for being the first with a new drummer, Steve Shelley, replacing Bob Bert, and for showing signs of the band's transition from their no wave past toward a greater pop sensibility.
Sonic Youth - EVOL A side Porky and B side from SST version. This version: A side Porky and B side Bilbo. Engineered at Before Christ, March 1986. B3's lyrics are printed in two sections, the first with lyrics by Sonic Youth and the second with lyrics by Lydia Lunch. B4 is listed on the sleeve as "Madonna, Sean and Me" and on the lyric sheet as "The Crucifixion of Sean Penn". It ends in a locked groove and has the printed duration of "∞".
The discography of American rock band Sonic Youth comprises 15 studio albums, seven extended plays, three compilation albums, seven video releases, 21 singles, 46 music videos, nine releases in the Sonic Youth Recordings series, eight official bootlegs, and contributions to 16 soundtracks and other compilations. In 1981, Sonic Youth signed with Neutral Records, and released its eponymous debut EP Sonic Youth the next year. The band's first full-length album was Confusion is Sex, released in 1983. The noise rock album is notable for being the first with a new drummer, Steve Shelley, replacing Bob Bert, and for showing signs of the band's transition from their no wave past toward a greater pop sensibility.
By 1986, a still relatively recently formed Sonic Youth was in a time of transition. Born out of the noise of New York's no wave scene and ensconced in the influence of Glenn Branca's avant-garde guitar experimentalism, the band's early albums slowly morphed from the snotty abrasive clatter of its self-titled EP and spotty first proper LP Confusion Is Sex into a far darker but still somewhat inconsistent merging of. haunted song sketches and foreboding noisy atmospheres on second album Bad Moon Rising.
