Michael Stern, conductor. Kansas City Symphony. Elgar and Vaughan Williams. A Magnificent New Symphonic Recording! A new symphonic tour-de-force from the Kansas City Symphony! This colorful, beloved English music has been captured in brilliant HDCD sound by GRAMMY®-winning engineer Keith O. Johnson. The Kansas City Symphony garnered tremendous critical acclaim for their first project on Reference Recordings, incidental music for The Tempest by Sullivan and Sibelius (Shakespeare’s Tempest, RR-115)
Vaughan Williams' The Wasps is great fun. Elgar's Enigma Variations is a wonderful piece in 14 sections. Each of the first 13 is named for, and musically describes, one of Elgar's friends. The last section - titled 'Enigma' is Elgar's self-portrait. It reflects the themes of the first 13, as Elgar's friends are reflected in his persona. But hey, I didn't even mean to write about the music. This is such a wonderful disk. Michael Stern and the Kansas City Symphony turn in one of the best recordings of the Enigma Variations ever. The recording is vivid and detailed, highlighting Elgar's brilliant orchestration: CAE swells with warmth and sweetness, Troyte is boisterous and bombastic with clear trombones and timpani, and GRS's barks are appropriately bold and aggressive. Nimrod is taken at a slower than normal tempo, though it fits perfectly well with Stern's view of the work.

Drive Featured Album, 21 January 2013. Fans of these two key players in the British music sphere will not be disappointed. Every nuance of Elgar's very particular dynamic markings is captured in this recording from the Kansas City Symphony, conducted by Michael Stern. The strings' shimmering vibrato, too, brings Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on 'Greensleeves' to life, with an orchestral sound so crisp that it's easy to be mentally transported directly to the concert hall
