The Palace of the Republic (German: Palast der Republik) was a building in the former East Berlin that hosted the Volkskammer, the parliament of the German Democratic Republic (East Germany or GDR), from 1976 to 1990.
Pergamon is the highest rated Tangerine Dream album, a significant indication that these Berliners were no studio twiddlers only but could garnish a stage with their elaborate electronic rock. In fact they have proven themselves rather brilliantly on a series of live renditions from Ricochet, Encore, Poland and this stunner! The opening piano work is a new revelation for the band and it delicately leads with guide-like precision through the ultra- ironically titled "Quichotte" suite and into the farthest celestial horizons . If you ever need to choose 1 Tangerine Dream album, let it be this one. 5 crying Vopos. tszirmay 5/5 2012-7-3.
Recorded in January 1980 at the Palast der Republik, East Berlin, the album was originally released in East Germany in 1981 under the title "Quichotte". The documented performance was one of the first by a western band in East Germany and earned Tangerine Dream many new fans in Eastern Europe. Featuring a line-up of Edgar Froese, Chris Franke and newly recruited member Johannes Schmoelling, the album was later released outside of East Germany under the title "Pergamon" (after the impressive museum in East Berlin)
