7th Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea. The 7th Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), the ruling party of North Korea, was held on 6–9 May 2016. The 7th Congress was the first Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea held since the 6th Congress in 1980, despite party rules stipulating that Congresses be held every four years.
But the so far last 6th WPK Congress was convened in 1980-at a time when most of the currently active North Korea watchers were either teenagers or not yet even born. The announcement of the 7th WPK congress after a hiatus of more than three decades is therefore big news by itself. The next Party Conference took place less than two years later in April 2012. It has so far been the last mega-event of the WPK. The main task of the April 2012 Party Conference was the formalization of Kim Jong Un’s succession. Resembling the declaration in 1998 of Kim Il Sung as the Eternal President of the country, Kim Jong Il was declared the Eternal General Secretary of the Party. The only guiding idea of the party was renamed into ilism.
Election of the 6th Central Committee and 6th Central Auditing Committee. The 6th Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) was held in the February 8 House of Culture in Pyongyang, North Korea, from 10–14 October 1980. 3,062 delegates represented the party's membership; 117 foreign delegates attended the congress, without the right to speak
The congress is the highest organ of the party, and is stipulated to be held every four years. The congress saw the reappointment of Kim Il-sung as WPK General Secretary and the Presidium of the Politburo established as the highest organ of the party between congresses. At this congress, Kim Il-sung designated his son Kim Jong-il as his successor. Korea emerged as a singular political entity after centuries of conflict among the Three Kingdoms of Korea, which were unified as Silla (57 BC – AD 935) and Balhae (AD 698 – 926). The united Silla was eventually succeeded by Goryeo in 935 at the end of the Later Three Kingdoms period. Goryeo, which gave name to the modern exonym "Korea", was a highly cultured state and created the Jikji in the 14th century.
In May 2016, North Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party held its first Party Congress since 1980. Kim Jong Un made several speeches during the Congress, which the Korean Central News Agency translated, summarized, and published. Those speeches are reproduced below, as well as a document on the Decision of Seventh Congress of WPK and a document listing the members of the Workers’ Party of Korea’s Central Committee.
North Korea has said its ruling Workers Party will hold its first congress in nearly 40 years next month. North Korea leadership expert Michael Madden looks at what such a rare gathering might actually do. If it hasn't been held for almost 40 years, why hold it now? This is when Kim Jong-un will finally formalise his own succession and set out his agenda. The build-up is part of the mystique and it is here that he will try to balance all the competing interests within the party, army and the state.
Why a party congress now? Kim Jong Un has a more party-oriented style of governing, similar to that of his grandfather. Also, North Korea has seemed to dodge massive natural disasters and widespread starvation seen in previous years, while the country's economic situation has slightly improved. Taken together, experts said Kim Jong Un is restarting the party congresses as a way to show the world that he rules a more stable country. What to expect: Kim Jong Un, 33, is expected to deliver a keynote address. Foreign journalists are seen filming and reporting from across the April 25 House of Culture, the venue for the 7th Congress of the Workers' Party of Korea, in Pyongyang, North Korea, May 6, 2016. And the event will also be used to praise Kim Jong Un and his leadership.
In his 15-minute opening speech, Kim touted the country's weapons development including a nuclear test, saying they had "elevated our respect to the world and enemies. Photos: Inside North Korea. The Mausoleum of Tangun is said to hold the remains of the ancient King Tangun - widely considered a mythical figure. North Korea built the pyramid in 1994 and has not allowed outside experts to verify the remains inside.
