As we look at the best New Wave albums of the ‘70s and ‘80s, we’re focused both on the early records which overlap with our 50 Best Post-Punk Albums list through the New Romantics, left-of-center power-pop and synth rock of the ‘80s. With their third album, the New York crew set themselves on a course to becoming the most important noise band of the past three decades. Amp-torture clinics like "Starpower" and "Expressway to Yr Skull" explore what bassist Kim Gordon had called "the darkness shimmering beneath the shiny quilt of American pop culture. When he went solo on Blank Generation, he enlisted Robert Quine, a Velvet Underground fanatic whose appropriately jagged guitar style was ideal for anti-love songs "Betrayal Takes Two" and "Love Comes in Spurts. And with the title track, Hell gave us what might be punk's ultimate anthem of liberation ripped from the void.
Pop/Rock Punk/New Wave. Punk Rock returned rock & roll to the basics - three chords and a simple melody. It just did it louder and faster and more abrasively than any other rock & roll in the past. Although there had been several bands to flirt with what became known as punk rock - including the garage rockers of the '60s and the Velvet Underground, the Stooges, and the New York Dolls - it wasn't until the mid-'70s that punk became its own genre
There not really punk there new wave - Darby Crash. Saw them in 1976, better than the pistols and clash at that time, closer to the Detroit sound than the rest. Best group of any generation gigs are still amazing. The Damned brought out the first TRUE punk record, New Rose. Wire's first album 'Pink Flag' 1977 on the Harvest label is one of the best albums I have ever heard, the tracks and productions are just raw. They are up there with Sex Pistols Anarchy in the UK. Future albums not up to scratch though too refined and not true raw punk.
