Eleventh Dream Day (EDD) is an American alternative rock band from Chicago, Illinois, United States. The band was founded by guitarists Rick Rizzo and Janet Beveridge Bean, who met at a place fondly known as 1069. This was a house/practice space/hang out in Louisville where at the time, Beveridge Bean was practicing with the band she was in with Tara Key and Tim Harris: the Zoo Directors.
Eleventh Dream Day may not have found fame with the post-Nevermind land grab, but the years that followed have been kind: widely beloved among indie rock's older guard, with twelve good-to-great records to their name, they've found the freedom to follow their own serpentine path wherever it leads. Works for Tomorrow, their latest, is their fieriest record in years, and among their finest ever.
Chicago stalwarts Eleventh Dream Day have carved out that most perfect niche in the world of indie rock. Having survived a pre-Alternative Nation stint on a major label and with members comfortably working in other musical or vocational arenas, they can calmly reconnect every few years and discharge a torrent of Crazy Horse-like guitar wrangling and pained lyrical bloodlettings with little concern for their commercial prospects. Works For Tomorrow does just that. The linchpin to this new operation is the inclusion of a second guitarist into the fold for the first time in many years. And what a player they chose. On the album closer End With Me, the two wend together and then split apart as they trade solos throughout the song’s nearly five-minute running time.
Eleventh Dream Day is known for their raw, inexhaustible live performances. Works For Tomorrow was recorded and mixed by Greenberg at the Loft (Wilco’s studio) and Mayfair Recordings. This reframing and understanding of history is keenly stated in the album’s title track when Rizzo sings, You see her, this must be the beginning or the end of whatever that was. Vanishing Point, the album’s opening track sets the tone with its brute force and driving rhythm.
Good mooooooorning, internet!!! I know, I know: last night when you went to bed, everything in the world of 1980s-style, guitar-based indie rock music was boring and terrible. But yo. This morning, everything is totally and irrevocably DIFFERENT. Let that sink in a minute. How do you feel? I know.
Veteran indie rockers, Eleventh Dream Day, release their new album. To say that this is an album of good old rock n roll would be an understatement. The ten tracks included here by Chicago’s Eleventh Dream Day unwind effortlessly from blues to rock to metal in a surprisingly good album. The female vocals of Janet Beveridge Bean are a shock on opener Vanishing Point and while that’s probably a sexist view it remains unexpected. It also makes for a superb beginning. On Works For Tomorrow ironically things may be ‘lucky for some’ on their 13th release. It oozes with passion and energy and sounds like a bunch of kids making music for the first time. Their vitality has to be admired and the resulting album is a minor triumph. Go Tell It brushes with the blues and has a stunning guitar solo to boot.
