Cheval Sombre: It’s a good question, that one, and difficult to answer. I don’t go into work with any preconceived notions – or any notions for that matter. I go someplace quiet with a guitar, sit, and see what happens. See what comes through. It’s always different, as each moment is. A: You played a show at the end of February to celebrate the release of your new single. I enjoy putting the needle on the record every time, as much as I did as a kid. I’m not against any medium. If it plays, good; if music can be heard, good. The iPod was a great invention.

Dean Wareham (Galaxie 500/Luna) and one man band Cheval Sombre (Chris Porpora) combine for an album they self describe as ‘Western Dreampop’. What they have brought together is a selection of tracks drawn directly or inspired by vintage C&W films, with much more western than country. Wareham states I am quite sure it is not alt-country. His attempt at Bob Dylan’s beautiful ‘ Tomorrow Is A Long Time’ ends up sheltered by chorals. Check out Elvis Presley’s gorgeous cover of this track to see how it should be done). On Blaze Foley’s ‘If I Could Only Fly,’ his voice is essentially a mumble. It’s the Merle Haggard version of this that is essential). This track, though, is rescued by some sumptuous guitar work and band arrangements, reemphasising the sorrow. It’s the musicianship throughout that provides the merits here, especially on traditional bar-tune, ‘Alberta’.

Cheval Sombre – a New York dweller by the name of Christopher Porpora – has let the songs come to him. Having released a debut in 2009, he appears to have been utterly passive in his journey to Mad Love. And his faith that everything would flow has effortlessly paid off, as he says himself, "It was a miracle of music unfolding – an extraordinary, organic evolution. One of the loveliest songs is 'Once I Had A Sweetheart', a well known traditional perhaps made most famous by Pentangle. The Cheval Sombre version is saturated in reverb and is along the lines of what This Mortal Coil did to Tim Buckley's 'Song To The Siren', yet the simplicity of this mesmerising track shines through the haze. It's a trick Porpora repeats.

When I was a child, I’d spend the day sitting in the afternoon sun on the floor in front of my tiny Tinker Piano, creating dreamscapes, and songs of wonder ... some would last for hours, filled with emotions and lengthy incantations, others were nothing more than snapshots of a moment, a feeling, or a fleeting thought. I had my own language in those days, lost in my own world where words like “be-oss” meant that something was too beautiful to describe, or “fam-oue,” for anything that swelled me to tears, and “moz-aa,” meaning that something existed for its own sake. There were countless others, descriptions that floated in an out of my little head, and I wish I had a grasp of them all today, because I would love to turn them over to Cheval, and see where his most delicate tinkerings would take them.“It’s Not Time” is one of those brief moments, like capturing the realization of a perfect afternoon, but by the time you realize the thought, the moment is gone. Fortunately, I can cue up Cheval’s brief ethereal emotional moment again and again, making it mine. “It’s A Shame,” found on Side B is the original demo of the song laid down in 2006, giving us a glimpse of the paths that were taken to bring his first album into fruition ... a generous piece of “moz-aa” if I ever heard one.
