Oceanic is the second full-length album by American post-metal band ISIS, released on September 16, 2002, by Ipecac Recordings. On July 23, 2006, Isis performed Oceanic in its entirety at KOKO, Camden Town, London as part of the All Tomorrow's Parties curated Don't Look Back series

The world’s most committed and fanatical radical organization has only recently gone by its current name, after the unrecognized Islamic State in Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) was proclaimed in April last year. Al-Sham has been most commonly translated from Arabic as the Levant, hence ISIL. It was previously known as Jama'at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad, Al-Qaeda in the Islamic State of Iraq.

Numerous amazing moments like this litter this album, as it’s hard not to mention the spine-tingling climax of In Fiction which could contend for the ultimate head banging moment ever. In a nutshell, very few albums have had the power to leave a stunning and overwhelming legacy to music itself, the songs are like different and ever-changing characters, containing intricacies no one could pick out on first listen. What is ISIS? It's an ambitious Sunni jihadist group that has fast become one of the world's most feared terrorist organizations  . The beginnings of this proto-state can be seen in Raqqa, where ISIS runs social welfare programs, providing food and fuel to the poor, and even operates its own food standards board. Those services come at a heavy price.

But by the time of this, their third album, they had evolved fully into the loin-cloth-wearing, sword-wielding, death to false metal –proclaiming band they’re known as to this day. With songs like the towering, Wagnerian call-to-arms Blood of My Enemies and the fan-hailing Army of the Immortals ( We were brought together/’Cause we’ve got the balls! ), Hail to England set the template for Manowar – if not the then-nascent power-metal genre as a whole – going forward. Isis, ‘Oceanic’ (2002). Although its members came up in the same New England hardcore/metal hotbed that spawned Converge, Cave In and Killswitch Engage, Isis charted their own path. Fronted by singer, guitarist and conceptualist Aaron Turner, the band took its leads from Melvins, Swans and especially Neurosis, whose mix of punishing heaviness, surprising delicacy and avant-garde sound design would prove strongly influential.

This Isis style is almost entirely removed from the modern day band. The additional notes even claim the same; In their early days, Isis were a band. They later moved on to a more-Neurosis influenced sound and most recently, post rock. Regardless, he's an amazing drummer. The vocals are really quite good in this album. While most of it is the screaming we all know and love, there's a bit of experimentation in this album. No cleam vocals, but there is some strange singing kinda stuff in Gentle Time, and the strange yells Aaron Turner does in Celestial really complement the song brilliantly, and they're not that easy to do either.
