Phonographer Chris DeLaurenti on the important "frames" of Irv Teibel's environments series.
The series consists of recordings of natural sounds such as a seashore with crashing waves or a thunderstorm with falling rain, without musical accompaniment.
Irv released environments 1 in September, 1969 and it sold incredibly well and was quickly picked up by Atlantic Records. Side B was recorded at the Bronx Zoo aviary. The soundscape was intended to improve alertness and make a room seem brighter and bigger but some early listeners said it gave them anxiety so Irv never considered it one of his most successful recordings. A track from Radio Programme No. 1, Sonata for Loudspeakers, also appears on the 1957 album Sounds of New Music alongside tracks from John Cage, Henry Cowell, Edgard Varèse, and others. Jacobs co-created the internationally acclaimed Vortex performances, which debuted at San Francisco’s Morrison Planetarium in 1957 and are widely cited as inspiring the technological innovation of surround sound.
