Eric Clapton is the debut solo studio album by British rock musician Eric Clapton, released in August 1970 under Atco and Polydor Records. After being successful with bands including The Yardbirds, John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers, Cream and Blind Faith, Clapton recorded an album under his own name in late 1969 and early 1970. The album cover shows Clapton sitting in a room which is going to be decorated and in which a ladder, a chair and some carpets are placed.
Eric Clapton first performed "Circus" (then called Circus Left Town ) on the MTV Unplugged program on 16 January 1992. It was left off the official album. Eric regularly performed this song in concert from 1992. However, it did not appear on an album of his until 1998's Pilgrim. Eric Clapton: The last night I spent with Conor, we went to the circus. We went to see one of those huge things that they do in America where they have three rings going on at the same time. You've got clowns and tigers and everything.
If Eric Clapton had decided to lie down his guitar and never play another note, his legendary stature in the history of popular music would still be secure. At the ripe old age of 23, he had lit the pop music world on fire with the Bluesbreakers and had finished playing with the first supergroup, Cream. In the middle of 1965, after parting ways with the Yardbirds, Clapton met up with the legendary John Mayall. John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers were a very popular blues band that worked the British club circuit. Part of his vision for his new sound was finding a way to sustain notes like a slide guitar player or saxophonist could. He could hear a bigger sound, with a deeper, throatier tone that his Telecaster and Vox amp combination of the time did not give him.
Let It Rain"Eric Clapton-Eric Clapton (1970) This tastefully arranged song from Clapton’s debut solo album begins with the guitarist overdubbing a sweet-sounding mini choir of three harmony-lead guitars with perfectly synchronized finger slides and vibratos. Together they create the effect of one instrument playing a melody harmonized in triads, but with the brightness and clarity that can only be achieved by three separate single-note lines, or voices.
